<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Name: Erin C.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
Ages of kids: M, 22 months (Two in February!)</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
Where are you originally from?: Huntington Beach, CA</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
How long have you been baby wearing?: Since M was a few days old. I knew I wanted to babywear, but getting my husband on board initially was a struggle. He tried M in a Moby and loved it! It's been downhill from there - SSCs, ring slings, and finally into the world of woven wraps when she turned a year old. Now that we're approaching two, I have my first wrap conversion mei tai (WCMT) in the works and I'm eager to put it to good use!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
How long have you been a Volunteer Babywearing Educator/in Training?: I made VBE status one of my 2015 goals, and by mid-January, I had it in the bag! I am a teacher in my civilian career, so sharing my love of babywearing comes naturally to me. I love seeing other caregivers discover the benefits of babywearing and the bond that comes with it. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
What's your favorite type of carrier or go-to carry?: When it comes to grocery store runs, we love our toddler Kinderpack. I was delighted to hear that my husband continued that routine of ours when I was away at military training. When it comes to woven wraps, my favorite carries are Half Jordan's Back Carry (HJBC) and Double Rebozo Shoulder to Shoulder (DRS2S). </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
What BWing obstacle/challenge/goal would you like to tackle/master next?: I am looking forward to falling in love with my WCMT and becoming proficient with different ways to tie it off.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
What hobbies do you enjoy when you're not babywearing?: Reading, running, dancing, traveling (well, that's done while BWing too).</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; line-height: 17.9400005340576px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
What are your future goals?: To continue to pursue my love of babywearing and sweet talk my daughter into being a willing participant for as long as I possibly can!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15935483770214156643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7548551255697948373.post-69245485989215211002015-03-09T19:50:00.001-07:002015-03-09T19:54:24.305-07:00Meet Your BWI Staff! <div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ages of Kids: 11, almost 4, and 18 months.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Where are you originially from?: My father was air force, so I'm from everywhere!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been babywearing?: Technically 11 years, but really only seriously for 4. I wore my oldest in an SSC when she was very small, but didn't start using wraps or other carrier types until #2 was born. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been a Volunteer Babywearing Educator/in Training?: I've been officially volunteering with the group since our affiliation in 2014, but only teaching since June. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What's your favorite type of carrier or go-to carry?: I can't pick a favorite! I love everything depending on the situation, but my most used carrier/carry right now is my Ringsling, and a half JBC using a short wrap. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What BWing obstacle/challenge/goal would you like to tackle/master next?: I'd like to figure out how to do a Kangaroo Carry propersly. That shoulder flip is my arch nemesis. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What hobbies do you enjoy when you're not babywearing?: Don't you mean "what hobbies do you have 4 minutes to enjoy, because you can strap a kid on and have a moments peace?" haha. I like to sew, and I homeschool my oldest, which is actually fun quite a lot of the time. I can't wait until all three of the kids are old enough to participate. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What are your future goals?: I am working toward becoming an Advanced Babywearing Educator with BWI, and then in the future also becoming an MBE. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15935483770214156643noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7548551255697948373.post-18816832714125623372015-02-17T21:39:00.001-08:002015-02-17T21:40:06.032-08:00Meet Your BWI Staff!<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Meet Alena, our go-to girl for all things DIY Babywearing (Do-it-yourself)!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been babywearing?: I've been babywearing since my oldest was 2 weeks old. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been a Volunteer Babywearing Educator?: I've been "training" since that first meeting in August or September. I've been DIY-ing since just before my son's first birthday. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What's your favorite type of carrier or go-to carry?: I flip flop between a Mei Tai and ling size 4 or 5 woven wrap. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What BWing obstacle/challenge/goal would you like to master next?: My next goal is to weave my own wrap. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What hobbies do you enjoy when you're not wearing?: Lots of crafty things: sewing, crocheting, paper quilling. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Name: Bailey Hornback, Advanced Babywearing Educator</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ages of Kids: 3 1/2 and almost 2</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Where are you from originally?: Springfield, MO</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been babywearing?: I started wearing when my youngest was a newborn. It was a necessity when a I had a newborn and a 21 month old at home to chase. I tried to wear with my oldest, but was using a carrier that was uncomfortable for us, so I just gave up. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">How long have you been a Volunteer Babywearing Educator?: 1 year</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What's your favorite type of carrier or go-to carry?: I like to wrap with woven wraps (right now, I'm loving a size 4). However, now that I have 2 toddlers on my hands I am often sporting a SSC as it is so quick to do ups and downs. My boys seem to need up and then right back down. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What BWing obstacle/challenge/goal would you like to master next?: In terms of wearing, I would like to become more proficient in using a ring sling. It is one of those things that I can teach, but can't do. I have a new ring sling coming and I am determined to become more comfortable with them myself. In terms of being a babywearing educator, I have my eyes on becoming a Master Babywearing Educator. I am really passionate about being an educator. Even when my kids are grown up, I can't see myself leaving the babywearing community. I love it too much. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What hobbies do you enjoy when you're not wearing?: I really don't have a lot of hobbies. I enjoy swimming and doing Zumba at the YMCA. I have also found an appreciation for hiking since we moved to CO. My family also volunteers to walk dogs every week at the local no-kill animal shelter in Pueblo. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What are your future goals?: My future goals are to get my 2 year old to sleep in his own bed. I would also like to implement a Pueblo babywearing meeting and see it grow to be successful before my time in Pueblo is up. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15935483770214156643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7548551255697948373.post-70626798372058523582015-02-06T08:49:00.002-08:002015-02-06T08:49:41.180-08:00Carrier 101<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Overwhelmed by how many types of carriers there are out there? Never fear! Your VBEs broke it all down at the January meeting. If you weren't able to make it, keep reading for a run-down of the major carrier types. :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ring Slings: Ring slings are a great option starting from newborn to toddler. It's a one shoulder carry that can be easily adjusted for a comfy fit for you and your baby. The bigger the baby/toddler, the shorter amount of time this carrier will be comfortable as it distributes weight on only one shoulder instead of two. For many mamas, this is a great carrier for quick trips in and out of the store. It's a great carrier for nursing as you can easily lower your baby to your breast and/or use the excess tail length for discreet nursing coverage. This is also great for front or hip carries. You can use it for quick back carry, but nothing too long term and you should be experienced with your ring sling before you try back wearing with one. Here's a great <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LCUuFHKbUA" target="_blank">ring sling troubleshooting tutorial</a>! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Woven Wraps (and Stretchy Wraps): Woven wraps are the most versatile in the carrier world. They come in different sizes/lengths and can wrap any size baby/toddler. Great for front, hip or back carries. There are so many types of ways to use a woven wrap, you will never get bored. There is a bit of a learning curve when you begin learning how to wrap, but once you do you might not go back. Also great for nursing your baby on the go. Check out our <a href="http://csbabywearers.blogspot.com/2013/05/woven-wraps-101.html" target="_blank">past blog post</a> with even more information on woven wraps and safety tips, including why stretchy wraps shouldn't be used for back carries!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Mei Tai: A Mei Tai is a traditional type of Chinese carrier. They can be used with newborns and into toddlerhood. It consists of a square panel of fabric and four straps. Some Mei Tais come with wider wrap straps, allowing for a woven wrap feel. These are said to be the best of both the soft structured carriers and woven wrap worlds, since they have features of both. A Mei Tai is tied on waist first, like you're tying on an apron. Your insert your baby in the body of the fabric and bring the straps around your opposite shoulders to tie off. Another great nursing on-the-go option! Here's a great <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-DlyAxI_uA" target="_blank">video to watch for using a Mei Tai with a newborn</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Soft Structured Carrier: These are the mainstream carriers people tend to know the most about. There are many on the market and people have their favorites based on preference. SSC's or buckle carriers can be used for front, hip or back carries depending on which carrier you have. Some buckle carriers are more comfortable than others, so it's important to try a few out before you commit to one. A good waist belt can offer a lot of back support and padded straps make for comfy long term wearing. Can be used most often with newborns through toddlerhood, although you might need to use a few tricks to get a newborn fitting comfortably. Some buckle carriers are easier to nurse in than others due to lack of adjusting action.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Pouch Sling: Pouch slings are easily stowed in a diaper bag or purse. It's super important to have the right size specific to your body so your baby can be high, tight, and close enough to kiss. Not great for long term wearing as it is a one-shoulder carry. Not ideal for newborns or toddlers either, but fine in a pinch. These carriers do best for a baby sitting unassisted. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As always, if you're unsure where to go from here or have ANY questions, feel free to ask a Volunteer Babywearing Educator in our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/babywearinginternationalofcoloradosprings/" target="_blank">Facebook Group</a> or at our next meeting. We would love to meet with you!</span><br />

As always, there are many options on the budget spectrum! It's important to remember that he/she will already be getting warmth from your body heat. So, keep a close watch to make sure he/she doesn't get overheated!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you like to be <b>crafty and make do-it-yourself projects</b>, you can create your own <a href="http://www.fineandfairblog.com/2013/09/diy-no-sew-babywearing-poncho-coat.html" target="_blank">no-sew fleece poncho</a> or this <a href="http://cavernofcraftiness.com/how-to-make-a-babywearing-cape-cover-poncho-tutorial/" target="_blank">cape cover</a>!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Oversized coats or sweaters</b> are great to zip up over you and baby. You can also wear a backwards hoodie zipped up over the both of you. Your baby has a built in hood this way if you're front wearing! Then you can wear your own coat/jacket on your back. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A <b>blanket</b> can always be tucked into any carrier or wrap. This is great for quick trips in and out of places. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you're in the market for something made specifically for babywearing in the winter, Kowalli makes a winter cover that fits right over you and baby. Ergo has<b> babywearing jackets</b>, but it may be harder to get your hands on one since they stopped manufacturing them. <b>Amautis</b> require no baby carrier at all, as you just slide baby into the coat itself. These tend to be more pricey and tough to find, but are great if you want a solution outside of a carrier/jacket combination. <b>Peekaru</b> vests are also great options.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Wraps</b> are fantastic for winter! Using multiple pass carries can give a cozy, blankety feel for both of you! Wool woven wraps are super warm and have a thick feel. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Once you have your cold weather babywearing gear ready, these are great tips: </b></div>
<div>
-Footie pajamas or Babylegs will keep baby's legs warm while in the carrier. Pants can ride up once you get baby in a good seated position while in the carrier. If you are using footie pajamas, make sure they're a tad oversized so no extra pressure gets put on baby's feet. This could also encourage leg straightening. </div>
<div>
-Pre-tie your carrier for easy ins and outs!</div>
<div>
-Make sure to keep special attention to baby's airway with extra layers of coat or blankets nearby. Baby's head should still be close enough to kiss and their chin should be off their chest. </div>
<div>
-Heat escapes from baby's head and feet first. So make sure to keep a hat on him/her! If you're back wearing, put the hat on baby before they go up on your back. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

This was our first year as an official Babywearing International chapter to participate! We hope everyone had a great time at all of our events and playdates. This year we celebrated by having a trip to the zoo, a potluck at one of our member's houses, park playdates, an ice cream social at a local ice cream shop, a playdate at the mall play place, a babywearing ballet class, and a donut party to end our week's festivites!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>By: Alena Sutherland</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When making or shopping for a carrier, fiber content is a good place to start. I love natural fibers. 100% cotton, 100% linen or a cotton/linen </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">blend is my kind of jam. But not all cotton is created equal. Bottom-weight is what you want. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><i>What does </i></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><i>bottom-weight mean?</i> It means a fabric you would make pants or a skirt out of. So all those lovely, </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">pretty patterns on quilter's cotton are out, very sorry. Don't worry, they can make a great accent panel </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">on a mei-tai or pocket on a ring sling tail.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>So, what are safe fabrics? </i></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Osnaburg is a popular choice for DIY carriers. Natural in color, it takes to dye easily. It can be found </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">at most Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby locations, and sometimes JoAnn's. Bottom-weight linen is also a </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">good choice. My friend recommends <a href="http://www.fabrics-store.com/">http://www.fabrics-store.com/</a> for linen. She says product number </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">IL019 is good for wraps or ring slings and product number 4C22 works well for soft-structured carriers</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and mei-tai panels. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>What about tablecloths? I hear about them online a lot...</i></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Yes, I love a great tablecloth as much as the next crazy DIY babywearer. 100% cotton is my preferred </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">fiber content. Mahogany Brand on Amazon.com and Threshold brand from Target are a couple great </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">brands to try. I love to hunt thrift stores like the Arc for tablecloths too, but have a good feel for fabric </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">weight before you try this if you're new to babywearing DIY. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>How about curtains? </i></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">If they feel like one of the tablecloths I mentioned above, go for it. Otherwise, take a pass. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>What about bedsheets? </i></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Only for emergencies, I say. And then, only doubled. They are too thin and not sturdy enough to hold a </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">seam. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If wrapping isn't your style, you'll need additional supplies to create the carrier of your dreams. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>What are safe rings for ring slings?</i> I order from slingrings.com. They are saftey and weight tested and </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">approved for babywearing. Multiple pretty colors to choose from and they ship quickly. If you're in a </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">pinch, you can use rings purchased from a feed and tack store. Look for something that is at least 3/8” </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">thick and has smooth welds. Craft rings which are 1/8” thick from JoAnn's, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">etc., are NOT SAFE. Please, plan the extra 3 or 4 days for shipping and buy from slingrings.com. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>Where to buy safe buckles/webbing for a soft structured carrier?</i> <a href="http://strapwork.com/">Strapwork.com</a> is the place to go for </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">these items. I've never made a soft-structured carrier, so I have no personal experience with them. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>Thread?</i> I like Gutermann thread. Other name-brand poly-coated threads should be just fine as well. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now, with your supplies in hand, what would you like to make?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Wrap</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A wrap is the simplest to make. First, pre-wash your fabric. Then, simply cut to width and length, add </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">tapers if they thrill you, and hem. Most wraps are 28”-30” wide. If you want tapers, be sure to cut them </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">like a parallelogram, not a trapezoid. If you've forgotten your geometry, don't worry, here is a visual: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrZhedq7pesezxp109GVo2umCc3l3dPjO7S8AzhYgq8tkya4SN_FFYv4yt6aaaRet1adgn9HFMqTtJJ8cScS0FbsOE7KXJH51p1Zrh4UnEIAAHdxMGdXHUfFK9dbFyFjyXgs4TZx7Wds/s1600/trap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrZhedq7pesezxp109GVo2umCc3l3dPjO7S8AzhYgq8tkya4SN_FFYv4yt6aaaRet1adgn9HFMqTtJJ8cScS0FbsOE7KXJH51p1Zrh4UnEIAAHdxMGdXHUfFK9dbFyFjyXgs4TZx7Wds/s1600/trap.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjWLeMkDkx9vty-Hg-vW0CftiiXJdUzuFtR9GaH_losNxT1HZhERJBXEooV2S1UcA-fpQX9s_68vVoO6rhKleH4hycTFhX84UFBwuAHWIyVMHI08qSgERqmtnZx6QrV0_bqD7dCiiJNI/s1600/parallelogram1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjWLeMkDkx9vty-Hg-vW0CftiiXJdUzuFtR9GaH_losNxT1HZhERJBXEooV2S1UcA-fpQX9s_68vVoO6rhKleH4hycTFhX84UFBwuAHWIyVMHI08qSgERqmtnZx6QrV0_bqD7dCiiJNI/s1600/parallelogram1.png" height="70" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">You want the green parallelogram, not the red trapezoid. This way, you have the same length along </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">both the top and bottom rails. How long would you like your wrap? This handy table from </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><a href="http://paxbaby.com/">paxbaby.com</a> is my favorite quick reference. I've added a column of “Length in yards” which I rounded </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">to an easy-to-measure number so you know how much fabric to buy at the store. Keep in mind most </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">fabrics shrink in the wash, so buy a little extra.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Size Length in meters Length in feet Length in inches Length in Yards</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">2 2.7 8.86 102.36 3</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Ring Sling</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A ring sling sews up fairly quickly and easily. Your fabric should be about around 30” wide. Lengths </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">vary from 62” to 95” finished. Finished means you need to add a few extra inches for your shoulder </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">sewing. You pick a shoulder style: gathered, pleated, eesti(for personal use only, this shoulder style is </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">licensed property to Jan at Sleeping Baby Productions). Be sure to have a minimum of 3 rows of </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">stitching. Please visit <a href="http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/slingsize.html">http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/slingsize.html</a> and </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/shoulders.html">http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/shoulders.html</a> for some of the best information on the web for </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">DIY ring slings. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Remember, all of these DIY safety qualities should hold true when you're shopping on Etsy, Facebook swap groups, or elsewhere online. If you're ever unsure of the characteristics of a DIY carrier being sold online, go with your gut! The safety of your little one depends on it. Always compare prices to other retail sources. <b>Sometimes</b>, if the price is too good to be true, it is. And of course, you can always ask a VBE on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/babywearinginternationalofcoloradosprings/" target="_blank">BWI Colorado Springs page</a> for advice or a second opinion. Happy and safe babywearing!</span><br />

Having two hands free with baby behind you can be invaluable. But we have to put the safety of our kiddos first and foremost. (If you're new to back carrying, please use the help of a spotter or practice over a couch or bed.) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here are some great videos to demonstrate how you get a baby on your back depending on your carrier type. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Soft Structured Carriers</b> are great options for back carrying. The waist belt can offer a lot of back support, and padded straps can make for a comfy wearing experience. Once you have the waist strap secured around your waist, you can use a "hip scoot" or a "superman toss" to get baby into the carrier on your back. Watch this video to see how it's done.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q1RaaiIkoHE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Woven Wraps </b>are incredibly useful and versatile when back carrying. With some practice, you can get baby high and snug on your back. This can alleviate a lot of the discomfort that comes from having them too low or far from your body in other carriers. There are numerous back carries you can use with a woven wrap. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">A </span><b style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Mei Tai </b><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> is a lot like a SSC (soft structured carrier), but has the great comfort qualities of a woven wrap. For both a woven wrap and a mei tai, you can use a "hip scoot," "santa toss," or a "superman toss." The video below gives a great rundown of these methods. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/fYZvSF3bttg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Again, remember to use a spotter or practice over a bed if you're new to back wearing. If you still have some questions, ask a Volunteer Babywearing Educator on our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/babywearinginternationalofcoloradosprings/" target="_blank">BWI Facebook page</a>, or come to our next BWI Colorado Springs meeting! We look forward to seeing you there to answer your questions and get to know you better!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>Guest Blog Post By: Erin Carpenter</i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As a newcomer to the babywearing world, the sticker shock of various woven wraps </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and carriers can leave you wondering if this is even feasible for your family, or if </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">this is a practice for the wealthy and privileged. I was a first time mom without the </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">financial means or support at home to afford what I thought was the “necessary” </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">carrier, an Ergo. Unaware and uneducated about my options, I fell prey to the allure </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">of a <a href="http://csbabywearers.blogspot.com/2013/06/why-we-should-be-concerned-with-fake.html" target="_blank">counterfeit carrier</a>, with its lower price point. You don’t have to make the same </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">mistake as I did, and you don’t have to sacrifice safety in order to wear your baby.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Donated Carriers</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There are several specialty non-profit organizations that will donate a carrier to </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">you, based upon family circumstances.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">VBE Natalie has made a number of her own carriers, with patterns and materials </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Low Cost Carriers </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Little did I know when I first started out, there are safe and time-tested carriers </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">out there that are low cost! The Infantino Sash Mei Tai can be purchased for less </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">than $25 at your local big box store. There is a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/156002947911287/" target="_blank">"Babywearing on a Budget"</a> group on </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Facebook where users can buy, sell, and trade carriers under $100 – you might even be in </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">the right place at the right time and score a much pricier carrier for a steal! Local </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">resale groups and Craigslist are also good options for looking for a budget carrier. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I regularly see stretchy wraps for sale. Use caution when purchasing a carrier </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">through the last though, as counterfeit items will show up. When in doubt, get a </span><br />

Thanks to all who attended. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
We talked a lot about hot weather babywearing and steps you can take to make sure you and baby stay cool. Using carriers that only have one layer like Ringslings or Soft Structured Carriers are really helpful. And if you're using your woven wrap, using carries with single layer passes ensure that baby will be cooler. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
We also discussed cooling towels that you can buy to place between you and baby to help regulate both your body temperatures while wearing. 'Frog Toggs' is a great brand of cooling towel for not a lot of cost. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
Also demonstrated at this meeting was a Torso Carry (also called a Kanga Carry) using a beach towel. If you're at the pool with the kids and you forget your carrier, never fear! You can turn your beach towel into a quick carrier with a few steps. If you've never attempted a back carry, make sure you are comfortable wearing your baby first. Then practice back carrying over a soft surface (like a couch or bed, etc.) and use another person to help spot, if you can. Baby should also be able to sit unassisted while using a back carry. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/2uniAmJHStk?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">If you joined Babywearing International at this meeting, welcome and thank you! Your annual dues of $30 help us expand our library, train our Volunteer Babywearing Educators (VBEs) and help us print materials to get the word out for babywearing! If you haven't yet joined, <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/13PHUe_0AtMiTO6vpXzwmU_ZfLjmaR828u1yrsvjXjW4/viewform" target="_blank">join here today!</a> $30 also allows you to checkout one carrier from our lending library every month for the year that you've paid dues. A great deal if you're in the market for a new carrier but aren't ready to commit before trying one. BWI membership is also a great gift to someone you know that might be expecting!</span></span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>

Thanks to those of you that could make it! We are doing our best to get things organized and have a topic for each meeting. Galen D. showed us a Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC). This carry is a great for anyone that might be new to woven wraps. It's also fabulous for nursing and front cuddling a sleepy baby. </span><br />

Rebozo <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Babywearing gives incredible opportunity for versatility. Depending on your child's size, duration of time you'll be wearing them, and your own personal preferences for what's comfortable, there is always a carrier that can meet your multitude of needs. Some options begin to look awfully similar, so it's a great idea to look more closely to find what really will work best for us!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />So, let's compare the Ring Sling alongside it's traditional Mexican Rebozo counterpart. But first, here is a video from Galen D. to help ourselves become better acquainted. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ll92D9394pg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A Ring Sling is a long piece of fabric with two rings (typically nylon or metal) sewn to one end. The fabric is threaded through the rings and makes a pouch for the baby to sit comfortably with a deep seat. Because the fabric can be pulled through the rings, it's easy to adjust for any sized wearer. These are wonderful carriers for newborns and infants. They're also great for quick "ups" with toddlers, but can get more uncomfortable depending on toddler size. Because Ring slings offer a one-shoulder carry, there is not as much support for longer periods of wearing time. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMetn22EnSBIQ9svhrGjbu_qQk1RR6WR42NVUH3JF27Ex4N2YQ5AcFH3Df1X3mp5fjLEwfS5zWuCp44D6WtCRb7l29400XxBhicKpvlYXqGkAm-oe1_vkaVNL6iLiht6bjNMPRsOhtmQM/s1600/MeganBlanton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMetn22EnSBIQ9svhrGjbu_qQk1RR6WR42NVUH3JF27Ex4N2YQ5AcFH3Df1X3mp5fjLEwfS5zWuCp44D6WtCRb7l29400XxBhicKpvlYXqGkAm-oe1_vkaVNL6iLiht6bjNMPRsOhtmQM/s1600/MeganBlanton.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Megan B. wears her one month old newborn son in a ring sling. </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />Many people find the rings easy to adjust. Any slack in either the top or bottom rails can be pulled through the rings to make things more snug and comfortable for you and your baby. Ring slings are best for front or hip carries, but do not offer much variety aside from those. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />A Rebozo is a long piece of fabric that can be tied into a slipknot. Check out this video if you'd like to see how it's done.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Va30BaXw2a0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> This carry looks a lot like a ring sling, but the slipknot sits where the rings would otherwise be. Similarly to the ring sling, it's great for quick trips because it sits on one shoulder. Short woven wraps are often used with this carry (Size 1-3) and can also be used in various other front, hip and back carries. To offer even more versatility, a separate pair of sling rings can be used to make a no-sew ring sling! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: small;">The slipknot can be a bit daunting for anyone who is unfamiliar with how to attempt it. Once a slipknot is accomplished, it does take two hands to adjust, as Galen mentioned. It takes some practice, but it's great in a pinch if you have a shorty wrap or DIY babywearing safe fabric to work with! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Both carries are great for nursing, as well. If you like to nurse discreetly, any extra tail can be brought over the top of the carrier to give a bit of covering. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br />The rest is up to personal preference. If you'd like to try either a ring sling or a rebozo out, come to our next BWI Colorado Springs meeting and check out our lending library. With a BWI Membership you can take a carrier home for a month and see what works best for you! Happy Babywearing. :)<br /> </span></div>
